Difficult interview question
If you contact an interview, and the interviewer ask me:
Why did you leave your previous job?
How will I answer this Question?
Help me please
It depends to a considerable extent on why you did leave your job!
You want to construct an answer that is honest, but shows you in the best possible light.
Remember there is no right or wrong answer. The interviewer wants to understand your motivation, and your goals, how you will fit in here. And what went wrong there.
Try not to criticize your current or past employer. Even if you left because there was a problem between you and them, say that usually you get on with everyone, but you just didn’t seem to get on, you don’t really know why.
Underplay the problem, don’t say “we fought all the time”, or “we had a personality clash”, just that you didn’t get on.
You can say you left to further your career, take on new challenges, achieve a promotion, increase your salary.
You might say “I think I have achieved all that I can in that role. There isn’t a clearly defined career path, nor much chance of promotion. I have learnt all I can, and now I am looking for a new challenge.”
If you left under a cloud then that is a little more difficult, but does have to be addressed. I have dealt with it in this post. Please reread it here.
What If Your Contract Was Terminated
terms with it, analyse what went wrong, pick yourself up and redouble your efforts to be above reproach
You will need to be able to assure future employers that whatever happened won’t be repeated, you have Identified the issue, learnt from your mistake, and addressed it, and can guarantee there will be no re-occurrence.
