I would like to get a promotion but I don’t know what to do.

Please advise me

Many people try to work long hours and hope to be recognised, but often that just leads to you being taken for granted. 

You need to be confident of your worth to the company, and in your ability to deliver for them. This is what will get you noticed and eventually promoted.

Are you absolutely confident you can do the next level job, the one you want to be promoted to, and manage the attendant responsibilities? Do you know what is required? Do you hold any qualifications that are needed to be promoted to it? Is there any training required? Do you have the skills? If not can you acquire them? And importantly is your confidence in your suitability and ability visible to others?

You can make it visible by offering to step up to the plate to cover holidays, sickness or busy periods. Be confident and assertive but not arrogant, and be careful not to “step on any toes”.
 
Do you have the good of the company at the heart of everything you do, and act as if you are invested in the company, or own it, even though you are only an employee? Or do you give the impression that you are an employee with no vested interest. Both attitudes will be noticed, the former will create the best impression.
 
You need to be thinking strategically, understanding where your role fits in the organization, and how your actions impinge on the rest of the company.
 
Build a strong relationship with management, particularly your immediate manager. They are the person whose opinion will count when you are considered for promotion. They are the person who will do your annual appraisal, who is expected to know you, your capabilities and your suitability for promotion.
 
Make sure your manager knows what you achieve. Discuss it with him.  Be prepared to accept constructive feedback. Make sure he knows what your ambitions are. That you are ready, willing and able to accept a promotion.
 
They might champion you, speak up for you, and put you forward. But first you need to show without a shadow of a doubt that you are ready, are a safe pair of hands, can be trusted and will not let them down.
