No practical working experience
I have a B.A in mass communication. Although, I have already done 3 months industrial training in a print media, I couldn’t secure a place in a broadcast media to do the remaining 3 months as was applicable in my school back then. So, I don’t have any practical working experience in broadcast media which is the actual place I have passion for.
When I graduated I got a job as a secretary in an accounting firm where I am working till date. I have tried to secure another job because here the secretaries are just treated like roadside typist, no training and I’m dissatisfied with it, but the issue now is if I want to change jobs I don’t know which career path to take. I see job vacancies but they have age specifications which I am above, what do I apply for that will pay me better than where I am, I don’t even have the opportunity to further my studies or go for a professional course.
Please I need your advice as I am tired of this place as nothing is challenging me here.
Let’s look at what you have achieved. You already have a BA in mass communication. All degrees confer transferable skills to some extent. So, you could apply for anything that requires graduate status. Also, you can still apply for positions even if you are out of the age range specified.
You don’t give me much information about your age and circumstances.
If all that is stopping you getting the job of your dreams is 3 months work experience in broadcast media, why don’t you consider an unpaid internship, if you can manage financially. The company may even agree to pay your travelling costs, and maybe even a small allowance.
Perhaps you could get one with a company you would be interested in working for, because if you impress them during your internship, they may offer you a permanent position.
Failing that, look at the career management posts I have already written and carry out a complete review of your career goals, and of the job market.
