No prospect of promotion
Thank you for the advice you have given to me.
I am very worried because I have a degree and I am an accountant by profession. But I am very underpaid, and my managers are less qualified than me, so they cannot even propose me for any promotion.
I have applied so many jobs with no luck and sometimes am feeling like life is so unfair to me.
Please advise me because I don’t know where and why I fail.
I think there are several issues here.
Firstly I don’t understand why you think your managers being less qualified than you means they can’t recommend you for promotion.
They can, but the key question is, do they want to? If you believe they do not, maybe you should discuss the situation with them and try to argue why you are worthy of promotion.
Or perhaps you mean that there are no opportunities above them, perhaps because the company is small, or has a very flat hierarchy. If that is the case you need to look elsewhere for a position with some prospects of promotion.
But if you are in a big company, and there are opportunities they won’t propose you for then you need to get past them and make yourself known to senior managers, in some way, without treading on toes.
Volunteer for working parties, committees, projects, where you might get noticed, Be sure you go to any company social events and make connections. Speak to your HR department about your ambitions.
If you are in a small company and these people you mention are the owner /managers/partners, propose to them that you should be interacting with clients and pitching for higher level work. If they don’t agree, seriously consider changing jobs.
The next issue is why you are not having success in job applications. I have covered this already in this section so am referring you to this page.
So in summary you need to be clear with your management about your ambitions, discuss the situation and honestly evaluate it, and your prospects of promotion and salary increase. If they are not good, start job-hunting. Please read the advice in the link above for action you could take to improve the chances of your applications being successful.
Please don’t sit at your desk thinking life is unfair. You have worked hard to get a degree and accountancy qualifications. Get out there and get the job you deserve.
Good luck
