Relocation – 5 Things to Consider before Accepting the Offer.
What do you need to consider if you’ve found your dream job but it needs you to relocate.
- Is this Permanent?
Will you be asked to take another move in a few years? If it doesn’t work out what will your options be then?
- Effect on Family
This can be very simple if you are young free and single. There is only you to consider.
If you have a family of your own you need to consider your spouse or partner’s work.
Can they relocate? Or work from anywhere?
Children? Where are they up to at school? Is this a good time to move them? Can you get them into suitable schools in your new area?
Parents? Will they need you to help care for them in the foreseeable future?
Or should you commute weekly and leave the family where they are? What will be the costs involved-rent, or hotel bills, petrol or train fares?
Is your social life based around your current home? How will you keep in touch with friends if you relocate?
- Where will you live?
Will the company help you find somewhere to stay initially? Some companies will offer to pay hotel bills for an initial period? If you are renting or buying will costs be similar to your current costs?
- Relocation costs
How much will the move cost? Will the company foot the bill, or part of it? If you decide to commute will they pay your travelling costs in lieu of relocation costs?
All these factors need to be carefully balanced when you are considering the offer.
